FOLLOWING THE RULES

Make a beeline for the French countryside to learn how boundaries benefit everyone

To keep the honeycomb strong, to make the very best honey, and to keep all the little honeybees safe and sound, bees must do things just so-according to bee rules. During her first days in the hive, young Beatrice is as busy as the proverbial bee learning all the rules her sisters can teach her.

But sometimes a young bee gets tired of following rules-especially if they interfere with her plans to visit a beautiful garden-perhaps the most beautiful garden in the world.

"No more bee rules," declares Beatrice. "I can make my own rules!"

Linda Talley's story, based on her lifelong research of French life, takes us along with Bea to the Chateau of Villandry in the Loire Valley of France, where a change in the weather turns her reckless adventure into a near calamity.

Artist Andra Chase has drawn upon her own travel in France to capture Bea's world in sparkling watercolors - the beehive, inside and out, the meadow beyond the bee-master's wall, full of buttercups, anemones and sweet violets, a colorful village market, and the famed terraced gardens of Villandry.

When Bea sets out on her adventure, she has much to learn about the world and about how rules can help keep her safe and happy. She is like children everywhere-eager to explore and discover and break free of rules. Bea learns that luck and kindness may sometimes save the day, but that breaking the rules can be risky business. She learns, as will children who read her story, just what rules are for.

A SURPRISE and added bonus is the "Enrichment Information" which includes lots of facts about France, the Loire River Valley, the Gardens of Villandry, a French Market, From Nectar to Honey, the Honeybee Colony, Pollen, Bee Stings, the Bee Hive and the Honeycomb. This is fascinating detail that did not make it into the story itself, but is very rich in interesting description.

A second big plus is the "Letter to Parents and Educators" which includes many relevant questions and comments to facilitate conversation with young readers about the message of the story...the importance of following rules. So even though on the surface this is just an engaging story for children, it is also truly helpful in a real way.

A New York story weighs love against material wealth.

CELEBRATING GIFTS OF THE HEART

Seventeen days until Margot's seventh birthday-and then it will be Bailey's birthday, too. It's the Great Birthday Month!

And birthdays mean presents-or so Bailey has heard.

"I'm sure you"ll get lots," says Claudia. Her owner Nicki always gets FABULOUS gifts.

"We just have to be good..." says Margot, "before we get all our presents, too."

And Bailey is good. He doesn't bark. He doesn't jump on Aunt Syl. He doesn't sleep on the sofa. Bailey is actually CALM! "Here come the presents," thinks the hopeful Dalmatian.

Bailey will soon discover that the best presents are not gift-wrapped

Set in New York City, author Elizabeth Happy's story of great expectations presents a dog's eye view of big city life-from comfortable brownstones to soaring skyscrapers, from the din of early-morning garbage collectors to the clamor of evening rush hour, from Central Park to the Staten Island Ferry.

Illustrator Andra Chase has captured the whole scene in vivid watercolors. And her depictions of the eager-to-please Bailey and his muddled sidekick Claudia are heart stealing.

First published in 1994, this timeless story includes the Twin Towers as an important part of this New York City landscape.

BAILEY'S BIRTHDAY is "a kiss and a bandanna" and a gift of love to readers of all ages.

So hit the sidewalks of New York with a girl named Margot and a Dalmatian pup named Bailey. Both are on their best behavior in anticipation of their shared birthday celebration. Children will feel Bailey's keen disappointment when all he gets for his birthday is a kiss and a bandanna. And they will rejoice with Bailey's realization that the love and support of his family are more important than material gifts.

A SURPRISE and added bonus is the "Enrichment Information" which includes lots of facts about The Statue of Liberty, the Staten Island Ferry, the famous New York Skyline, including the Twin Towers, Central Park and Manhattan Island.. This is fascinating detail that did not make it into the story itself, but is very rich in interesting description.

A second big plus is the "Letter to Parents and Educators" which includes many relevant questions and comments to facilitate conversation with young readers about the message of the story...the importance of love and family and home...and the UNIMPORTANCE of material possessions. So even though on the surface this is just an engaging story for children, it is also truly helpful in a real way.

ALOHA POTTER!

A little angelfish learns to cope with unwelcome teasing

What do you do if you are an angelfish who feels so bad you don't even want to go out swimming?

That's how bad Potter the angelfish feels some days, all because of a teasing crab named 'Alakuma. 'Alakuma teases Potter about his size, about his name, about his timidity, about everything.

Potter has three very good friends and each one has an idea about what Potter should do. "Tease 'Alakuma back!" suggests Lio the seahorse. "Stand up to him!" advises Stripes the shrimp. "Get mad! Fight back!" throws in Jolly the nudibranch.

Potter soon learns that these aren't the best responses to hurtful teasing. But eventually Potter has a very good idea of his own about how to deal with 'Alakuma and, over time and with the support of his three friends, Potter is able to use this new strategy to turn 'Alakuma from a teaser into, maybe...a friend!

Artist Andra Chase has captured Potter's underwater world - Hawai'i's coral reefs - in luminous watercolors. Exotic anemones, brilliant sea urchins and fantastically varied corals all glow with color and life.

Linda Talley's straightforward story offers even the youngest readers or listeners easily grasped tools for dealing with unwanted teasing - tools that may have the 'Alakumas in their lives saying "Aloha."

FREE October 22-26 Emily Breaks Free and Amazing Mallika

These reviews are from:  EMILY BREAKS FREE Bullying Children's Picture Book (Fully Illustrated Version) (Kindle Edition)
5.0 out of 5 stars Great lesson, October 10, 2012
By Stephanie -A great read to kids about bullies and feelings. We loved the doggies as the people in this story. Every kid should read this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too cute, October 5, 2012
By
Jeffery Baker This made my girlfriend giggle, she loves puppy tales. The mixture of different breeds havinc fun together made it even more cute!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures..., August 4, 2012
By critters -The pictures here are beautiful and are nicely optimized for Fire; the landscape format will even override a locked screen for maximum viewing. The print can be double-tapped to enlarge, a fact that probably should be explained for readers who aren't aware. Most highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars That Dog Is a Bully, July 18, 2012
By Nancy Mauerman (Portland, OR) -Emily, a dog in Boston, breaks from her person, meets a bully and a new dog to the city and finds herself in a pickle. The bully is funny and entertaining at the new dog's expense but his jokes create bad feelings inside Emily. She changes direction and breaks free from the bully. The lesson the book presents is direct but not preachy, the pictures are simply beautiful and echo the story's message through the body language of the dogs. I had some problems with the small text but I love the book plus at the end I found a map and sketch of all the important sights mentioned in the story.
I like stories that focus on noticing the feelings inside and making big choices, like this one.

BULLYING - COPING WITH PEER ABUSE

EMILY BREAKS FREE will help address the problem of bullying in a non-threatening context and suggest techniques for responding to a bully.

Emily is a nice, playful little dog. So why would she join forces with a big
bully like Spike? Even Emily is confused about the answer to that question. It's true that Spike makes Emily laugh, in spite of herself, and he is fun-in a way. Emily is flattered when Spike invites her to tag along with him.

But when Spike begins teasing a fluffy outsider named Cotton, Emily is sorry to see the hurt look on the little dog's face. And the dog biscuit Spike takes from Cotton does not taste as good as Emily had thought it would. Emily really regrets being lumped together with Spike as among "the meanest ol' dogs" Cotton has ever encountered.

Just when Emily is wondering how to make things right, a bewhiskered terrier named Emerson saunters onto the scene. A dog of principle, Emerson shows Emily that it is possible to break free of Spike.

Emily's story unfolds along the Freedom TrailTM, Boston's famous walking tour of historic sites from the Revolutionary era-the Old South Meeting House, Faneuil Hall, the Paul Revere House, the Old North Church, and more. These scenes of the American struggle for independence from Britain are a fitting backdrop for Emily's struggle to free herself from Spike and his tyrannical ways!

Author Linda Talley's compelling, graceful and carefully researched story about resisting bullying and finding freedom is irresistible reading for young and old alike. Illustrator Andra Chase's captivating watercolor depictions of the
colorful cast of characters, as well as her also carefully researched renderings of historic American buildings and other sights on the Freedom Trail will help bring this important story to life for all readers.

A SURPRISE and added bonus is the "Enrichment Information" whch includes lots of facts about the American Revolution, Boston, and the Freedom Trail, as well as interesting notes about Faneuil Hall, the Old North Church, Paul Revere House, Old South Meeting House, Boston Common and more. This is fascinating detail that did not make it into the story itself, but is very rich in colorful descriptions of Colonial Boston.

A second big plus is the "Letter to Parents and Educators" which includes many relevant questions and comments to facilitate conversation with the young reader about the message of the story...how to cope with bullying. So even though on the surface, this is just an engaging story for children, it is also truly helpful in a real way.

There are specific methods to avoid and cope with bullying embedded in the story.

CONTROLLING ANGER

Journey to India and discover ways to control a hot temper.

MALLIKA is a tiger with a temper. Her short fuse is ignited first by her infuriating brother Ben and then by a mischievous band of jeering monkeys. Short-tempered Mallika even manages to get mad at herself!

It takes Mallika a while to figure out that being angry is no fun and that a tantrum doesn't make things better.

India's Ranthambhore National Park is the scene of Jami Parkison's powerful story about managing anger. Once the private hunting grounds of maharajahs, Ranthambhore is now a wildlife sanctuary and home to the magnificent Bengal tiger. Under ancient banyan trees and among ruins of palaces and pavilions, this now endangered species rules the landscape. Ranthambhore is home to a host of exotic species, including leaping sambar deer, the regal peacock, the imposing tree-pie bird, and the revered langur monkey. Artist Itoko Maeno captures the mystery and excitement of Mallika's world in compelling watercolor illustrations.

So journey to India and Mallika's world and meet an amazing little tiger who learns amazing ways to control her hot temper.

A SURPRISE and added bonus is the "Enrichment Information" which includes lots of facts about India, India's People, the Ranthambhore National Park, the Peacock, the Sambar, the Banyan Tree, the Cicada, the Tree-Pie, the Langur Monkeys, and best of all the Bengal Tiger. This is fascinating detail that did not make it into the story itself, but is very rich in interesting description.

LEARNING ABOUT NUTRITION AND WELLNESS

A young black bear gets in shape in Wyoming's Grand Tetons

Stanley the bear loves living in the Grand Teton National Park-especially when campers leave something delicious behind. In fact, munching on cookies and chips is just about Stanley's favorite thing to do.

Then one day Stanley's sweet tooth leads him far from home. Living close to humans makes it easier than ever for Stanley to gorge himself on candy, not to mention soda pop and buttery popcorn. "This is the life!" he says.

But soon Stanley learns his new life is ridden with dangers he never imagined back in the forest. How will Stanley find his way home?

In this engaging story, Author Alyssa Chase Rebein invites young readers to take part in the unusual journey of a not-so-ordinary black bear. We learn about the unique landscape of the Grand Tetons, the life of a wild animal on the move-and a gentle lesson about the importance of making healthy choices.

Rich watercolors by Andra Chase capture Stanley's adventurous character and provide an artist's intimate view of the Yellowstone ecosystem.

A SURPRISE and added bonus is the "Enrichment Information" which includes lots of facts about the flora and fauna of the Grand Tetons. There are colorful details about the Grand Teton National Park, Jenny Lake, the Snake River, the "Drive-In," Stanley's Journey, Honey and Huckleberries, From Black to Blond Bears, and Born to be Wild! This is fascinating detail that did not make it into the story itself, but is very rich in interesting description.

A second big plus is the "Letter to Parents and Educators" which includes many relevant questions and comments to facilitate conversation with young readers about the message of the story...which is the importance of making healthy choices about food and exercise.

This story comes down very hard on junk food in a compelling way!

So even though on the surface, this is just an engaging story for children, it is also truly helpful in a real way.

PEQUEÑA THE BURRO

“I’m only a burro,” says Pequeña. “Useless as a broken toy. Common as a washrag.” With that moment of self-doubt our shaggy little heroine begins a journey of self-discovery that will speak to any child who has ever wondered, Who am I? Where did I come from? Where am I going?

Pequeña’s wise friend Sabio tells her about the strength, the steadfastness, and the capacity for hard work that were the burro’s important contributions to the building of Mexico, and Pequeña soon gets a change to call upon that heritage and to probe that being a burro is a great gift.

Mexico City is the setting for Jami Parkison’s inspiring story, and the heritage of that metropolis leaps from every colorful page. She presents a grand tour of Chapultepec Park – a cultural treasure from the time of the Aztec emperors – and creates a festive grand finale for Pequeña’s story at the Día de la Independencia parade in the historic heart of the capital city.

Pequeña will introduce children to the heritage of the burro and of Mexico and spark their curiosity about the “gold and silver shoes” of their own heritage.

KYLIE'S CONCERT  Serious reading for children ages 5-8

In an earlier book, KYLIE'S SONG, a young koala with a dream discovered that "you can do most anything if you try."  Kylie learned to sing, and her music brought joy to all her forest friends.

Now in KYLIE'S CONCERT, it is time for Kylie to say goodbye to those friends - even to her very best friend, Willy Wagtail.  She must leave the security of her eucalyptus tree to follow the forest path and a new dream.  On her journey, Kylie will meet some of the most unusual creatures of the Australian wilderness - among them the echidna, the tree kangaroo, and the tawny frogmouth.  She will see the forest's treasures and learn its secrets.  And she will be warned of a terrible danger threatening the forest world.

In this Kylie book, author Patty Sheehan has once again created a world of magic and meaning.  As childen travel with Kylie through the enchanting Australian wilderness, they will learn about the importance of taking care of our natural world.  And they will discover with Kylie that by nurturing their own dreams, they may make their greatest contributions to others.

Celebrate EARTH DAY with this inspiring story that children ages 5-8 will want to read again and again on their Kindle text only.

PARENTS AND EDUCATORS CAN HELP!

Give children time each day to tell about the things they enjoy doing and care about.
Have children list as many things as they can that they would like to do in their lives.

Don’t say: “Oh, that’s just your imagination,” or “You’re just dreaming.” Do say: “You have a wonderfully creative imagination,” and “Your dreams can come true in surprising ways.”

Model self-confidence and develop your own individual talents and abilities, your own uniqueness.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE STORY:

What was the real danger?
How did Kylie’s gift of song help her and the other forest creatures?
If Kylie had stayed at home, what would have been the loss to herself and her friends?
What talents and abilities do you have?
What are your dreams?
What might stop you from fulfilling your dreams?

Here are some ways you can help children to appreciate their inherent worth and encourage them to develop their talents and follow their dreams:

Emphasize the value of each person’s being different.
Help children find beauty and worth in each other.
Read biographies of people who dared to dream and to follow their dreams.
Encourage children to eliminate “can’t” from their vocabularies.

Because each child is unique, the seeds of whom they may become and what they can contribute are found in the things they enjoy and dream of doing. The first step is to awaken to these sources of joy; the second is boldly to take the path in pursuit of them, to “follow your bliss,” in the words of writer and teacher Joseph Campbell.

This inspiring story will be read with excitement by children ages 5-8.

Enjoy the journey!

Celebrate the Season with Your Child and this Breathtakingly Illustrated eBook for the iPad

Journey to the English countryside and meet Winston the Toad and his friend, Victoria the Bunny, and revel in the exquisite illustrations of the flora and fauna of rural England.

Toad’s life in the English countryside is nearly perfect. He has his meadow and his brook and a familiar stone to snuggle beneath. He has grasshoppers, beetles, and bugs of all sorts to eat. He has his friends – especially his friend rabbit.

There is no reason things shouldn’t go on forever in this same pleasant way.

Then, one summer morning, toad is taken captive, stuffed into a boy’s pocket, and transported from his happy home. When he finally manages to make his escape, toad finds that he has hopped headlong into an altogether new and different world.

This is the story of how toad copes with the loss of his comfortable home, old friends, and familiar ways – a story that will encourage young and old alike to greet change with optimism and good cheer.

Linda Talley’s simple narrative is beautifully illustrated by Itoko Maeno.  From moonglow over country meadows to lamplight on village cobblestones, her luminous watercolors capture toad’s town and country lives in radiant detail.

Be the first in your family to enjoy this fabulous illustrated classic eBook for children ages 5-8..
